About Me

Maxwell left teaching in 2001 to start Apartment Therapy as a design business helping people to make their homes more beautiful, organized AND healthy. The website started up in 2004 with the help of his brother, Oliver. Since then he has grown ApartmentTherapy.com, added TheKitchn.com, our home cooking site, and has authored four books on design. He now lives with his daughter in a lovely apartment in Brooklyn.

Marble Countertops 101: Yes, They’re a Great Idea!
I’ve always loved white marble countertops and I last wrote about them five years ago (43 comments BTW). They are bright, elegant, add character and are wonderful to cook on, particularly if you’re baking. They can also be one of the cheapest stone solutions if you choose Carrara marble, making them a great choice if you’re on an IKEA kitchen installation budget. However, many people are afraid of them due to the perception that they are high maintenance.

Happy 4th of July: A Letter from the Founder
Today is the 4th of July. This year the 4th falls on a lovely day of the week, a Thursday, giving everyone across the country, employers especially, a very good reason to take two days off instead of one, thus creating a very long weekend at home. Today is also Independence Day – the anniversary of our separation from the King of England nearly 250 years ago, however it is not the day on which the Declaration of Independence was actually signed.

The Jam Report: Dundee Orange Marmalade
Brand: Dundee Orange Marmalade Fruit: Seville Oranges Location: Scotland Rating: Addictive* Are you a marmalade lover? Then we have to tell you that out of all the marmalades you can easily find in stores, we like Dundee best. Perhaps it’s the big thick white glass bottles that make great pen holders when you’re done. Perhaps it’s the Seville oranges that have a great history as having been created from bitter Spanish oranges that no one wanted to eat.

Check Out Founder Maxwell’s Dream Kitchen Renovation
Back in the early spring of 2016 I tore down a little house my family had purchased 18 years earlier and, taking it on as finally my own and with money that I inherited when my father passed away, I rebuilt it from the ground up (actually below the ground, up) with the help of three wonderfully skilled people, John Berg (architect), Peter Germano (contractor) and Rebecca Robertson (interior designer). The project took nearly two years, allowing me to move in by Christmas 2018.

Happy Fourth of July from Maxwell @ Kitchn!
Waking this morning and walking across the Manhattan Bridge to the office, it was remarkable how quiet the city was. It is a particularly unique thing to have a peaceful day in New York City, so I’m savoring it and using it to bring back something we haven’t done in years: wishing you a happy holiday. When our sites began in 2004, we used to start an open thread after linking to some good thoughts by others on each national holiday.

Here in our NY offices and also remotely, all of our employees are part of a super-cool digital wellness network that tracks our exercise, prods us along (we can compete with other companies), and keeps up our fitness awareness. Founded by my brother, Oliver Ryan, Count. It is an awesome addition to our company culture, so I’m proud to share this short video he just made. Count.

Easy Dinner Recipe: Viking Chicken
I’ve been doing a lot of cooking this week, and it’s been really nice. When my marriage ended a year ago, I was suddenly thrown back into cooking by myself again, and at first I was lost at sea. I had forgotten everything I’d known — the touch and the feel of cooking — that I’d had ten years earlier when I was single.
